What Douglas Mapfumo learnt from his Cape Town stint

Former Cape Town City striker Douglas Mapfumo has completed his move to Motsepe Foundation Championship side Black Leopards.

The Zimbabwe international has been training with Leopards for the past two weeks with the hope of securing a deal.

It seems as if the 22-year-old has impressed the technical team led by Rodwell Dhlakama. His deal was sealed this week and could be available for selection when Lidoda Duvha takes on Uthongathi on Sunday.

“This move means a lot to me. It’s a move for me to step up,” Mapfumo told FARPost.

“Leopards were looking for a striker so the new coach suggested that I give it a try. That’s how my move came about.

“All I can say to the supporters is they must be patient with me. The time will come for me to fire, it might take time but the time is going to come for me to score,” he said.

ON HIS STAY AT CAPE TOWN CITY

“I didn’t get enough opportunity there because I got injured and I played only the first six games and then I was out.

“At Cape Town, one thing that I learned is that you must always be ready at any given time because you never know when the coach is going to take you in so you must always be ready. Whether you are playing or not.”

Mapfumo arrived in South Africa in 2020 to join now defunct Cape Umoya United. He was signed by the Citizens at the beginning of the 2021 season.

But after struggling for game time, Mapfumo was sent out on loan to Cape Town All Stars. He was officially released by City in January this year.

He joins a Leopards side that has struggled to score this season with just seven goals in 10 matches.
