The target Chiefs missed who’s proving Arthur Zwane wrong

A former Kaizer Chiefs target continues to prove Amakhosi coach Arthur Zwane wrong as he continues to sparkle for his new club.

During the pre-season, Chiefs hit a snag in their pursuit of Kobamelo Kodisang before his Portuguese club SC Braga opted to loan him out to Moreirense.

Moreirense play in Liga Portugal 2, the second tier of the South Western European country.

The former Platinum Stars winger is tearing Liga Portugal 2 apart, scoring all-important goals.

On Saturday, Kodisang scored his sixth goal in 13 outings [in all competitions] this season. On top of that, he has four assists to his name.

Moreirense beat FC Porto B 3-2, with the South African opening the scoresheet in the 27thminute.

WHAT ZWANE SAID

When Chiefs failed to sign the 23-year-old, Zwane suggested it was not a train smash as they had enough arsenal for the flanks.

“No, really not disappointed. I think we have assembled a very, very, very good squad,” he told the media.

“We’ve got a balance. We still have [Kamohelo] Mahlatsi, we still have KG [Kgaogelo Sekgota], we have many players that can play as a winger if you want to change the formation, to play with wingers.

“If you want to play with wing-backs, we still have players that can play, give us that power, left flanks and the right flank. So I think we have a balanced team….”

13 games into the season, Sekgota, who plays on the left wing, is considered a standout player for the Soweto giants. However, after 12 appearances, the Bafana Bafana winger has only managed one goal and one assist.

Chiefs’ top scorer, Caleb Bimenyimana, has scored six goals in six appearances, underlining the club’s overreliance on him. Four of those six goals have come from the penalty spot.

THE KODISANG QUALITIES CHIEFS NEEDS

Recently Zwane reminisced about Chiefs’ style of play that saw them dominate teams in the past. He further mentioned that they needed a Sekgota type of player on the right.

“We need to balance our play going forward. We need a player that can take responsibility off his shoulders on the right.

“If you look back, the style of Kaizer Chiefs we used to dominate from the wingers. We had players who were very quick on 1v1s.

“They would skin you and bring in crosses and look for combinations, and when you look at Sekgota, that identity is coming back, and that is what we are trying to do right now.”

While all of Kodisang’s appearances this season have come from the right wing, he is equally comfortable on the left wing. He can also play as a second striker.

Kodisang boasts tremendous pace, dribbling skill and good finishing technique.

Add to that, his defensive strengths are better than most wingers, and he is a perfect player for any coach who likes to play transition football.
