Former Chiefs midfielder’s brother named in Australia’s World Cup squad
Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Kearyn Baccus’ brother, Keanu, has been named in Australia’s 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The 24-year-old was born in Durban before moving to Australia as a child. He plays his football in the Scottish league for St Mirren and is held in high regard by Australia.
FAIRYTALE RUN
Baccus is having a fairytale run in the Scottish topflight and recently said he wished he had made the move earlier on in his career.
Despite arriving at his new club without a full pre-season, he has been a regular on the Buddies’ side.
The former Western Sydney Wanderers star’s impressive form has been rewarded with a place in the Australian side that will do duty in Qatar later this month.
He made his debut for Australia in September this year. Prior to that, he qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as part of Australia’s Under 23 team.
“I’ve played a fair few professional games back home, and now when I look back, it would have been great to have come over at an earlier age,” he told Renfrewshire Live Sport.
“But I think it’s panned out well this way too. I’ve got my experience in Australia, and now I can come here, grow again and hopefully keep improving.
“I played 100-odd games for Western Sydney Wanderers, and I think that’s going to help, coming here with more experience.”
CHIEFS STINT
His elder brother, Kearyn, turned out for Kaizer Chiefs between 2019 and May 2022. The central midfielder was released by Chiefs at the end of the season as the Soweto giants sought to rebuild their squad.
After his Chiefs stint, he joined Macarthur Football Club, an Australian professional club based in South Western Sydney.
