Real Madrid legend hits out at Benzema

Real Madrid legend Guti has hit out at Karim Benzema saying the striker is letting the Spanish giants down by making the upcoming World Cup in Qatar a priority over the club.

Benzema was not available for the La Liga champions on Monday night in a 3-2 defeat against Rayo Vallecano.

He also missed three of the last four games because of a muscle injury.

However, Benzema did make a comeback against Celtic in the Uefa Champions League and played for 28 minutes.

In an interview with Spanish television channel El Chiringuito, Guti claimed the Frenchman, Benzema must accept the risk of injuries ahead of the World Cup as players like Lionel Messi and Robert Lewandowski are still playing.

This season only, the 2022 Ballon d’Or winner has missed eight games for Los Blancos, Guti’s concerns are perhaps genuine.

GUTI ON BENZEMA

“Benzema? I don’t understand. Messi is playing, Lewandowski is playing, so many other players are. You have to accept the risk of injuries before WC, you can’t let your club down,” he said.

Having been involved in the last game, many have doubted whether France’s striker is indeed injured or just avoiding the risk of getting injured.

Although his manager Carlo Ancelotti has poured cold water on such insinuations.

The defeat has left the champions two points behind Barcelona on the table.

Coincidentally, Barca are in action tonight against Osasuna, if they win, they will go give points ahead of their rivals.

Guti also wondered why Madrid did not sign a back striker during the transfer window as they knew this could happen.

Benzema is expected to lead the forward line for France’s star-studded team in Qatar. They are in Group D with Australia, Denmark and Tunisia.
