Bale to lead Wales to the FIFA World Cup

Wales captain Gareth Bale is set to lead the national team to the 2022 World Cup that will be hosted in Qatar next week.

Bale was a doubt for the global soccer showpiece due to injury. He, however, recovered in time and will feature.

After parting ways with Real Madrid, Bale joined Major League Soccer outfit Los Angeles FC. His first season at the club was disturbed by injuries. He only made 13 appearances and found the back of the net three times.

“Has he played as many minutes as we’d like? Probably not. But that doesn’t worry me. He’s proved time and time again when he puts the Welsh jersey on, irrespective of how many minutes he’s played at domestic level. He’s always produced,” said Wales manager Rob Page.

“On big occasions, he’ll always turn up, thrive and enjoy it. He’s already with the [Wales] staff, over in the country and raring to go. Gareth has proven in the past that without minutes he can deliver in important stages.”

Wales, who will be making their first World Cup appearance in 64 years, were placed in Group B alongside England, Iran and the United States of America.
