Why Njabulo Blom is Hugo Broos’ preferred CDM

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has explained why Njabulo Blom is his preferred holding midfielder.

The Kaizer Chiefs academy graduate, Blom has been called up to the national team ahead of two friendly matches next week.

Bafana host neighbouring countries Mozambique and Angola at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit.

Blom, who only has one cap to his name, makes a return to Bafana after an impressive spell for Amakhosi. He made his debut in September 2021 when they defeated Ghana 1-0 at home for the World Cup qualifiers.

Blom has been one of the most consistent players for Chiefs this season under coach Arthur Zwane. His form comes after Zwane switched him from right back to a central defensive midfielder.

This season he has made 13 appearances for Amakhosi in all competitions so far.

“I think when I saw the performances of Chiefs in the last five, six weeks, they struggle a little bit,” said Broos when announcing his squad.

“Now they are better [Njabulo] Blom was always doing his performance. He was not disappointing even if the team were not in good play.

“He’s what I’m looking for when I’m looking for a defensive midfielder. I think if he can do that the way that he plays now on that position because before it was right back, right offensive midfield.”

Another Chiefs player who made it into the squad is Sekgota. He has been impressive for the Soweto giants in attack despite coming in from the bench most of the time.

This resulted in Broos rewarding him with a national team call-up in September for friendlies against Sierra Leone and Botswana.

Bafana play Mozambique and Angola on the 17th and 20th of November, respectively in Mpumalanga.
