Injured Sommer makes Swiss FIFA World Cup team

Yann Sommer has made Switzerland’s final FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 team while he currently battles to recover from a three-week injury layoff.

The 33-year- old Swiss number-one from German Bundesliga club Borussia Monchengladbach has been out of action since October 20.

Sommer sustained the injury in ‘Gladbach’s 2-1 away loss to Darmstadt in a 2022/2023 DFB Cup second-round fixture.

MISSES OUT

But his deputy Yvon Mvogo of French Ligue 1 side Lorient misses out on the FIFA World Cup after the 28-year-old limped off in the 31st minute of last Sunday’s 2-1 home loss to Paris Saint Germain.

Interestingly, Mvogo’s fellow Ligue 1 compatriot Jonas Omlin of Montpellier has made the final 26 cut.

Omlin has also been sidelined since October 22 after sustaining an ankle injury in a French Ligue1 fixture against Olympique Lyon that his side lost 2-1 at home.

But Swiss coach Murat Yakin still has youthful quality cover for the duo in the shape of 24-year-old Borussia Dortmund number one Gregor Kobel, who will be making his World Cup debut.

Meanwhile, 31-year-old midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri is heading for his fourth World Cup campaign following appearances in 2010, 2014 and 2018.

Switzerland will depart Zurich for Doha on November 14 ahead of their FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Group G campaign that kicks off on November 24 against Cameroon.

SWISS WARM-UP MATCH

The Swiss’ will warm-up for that fixture with an African-flavoured friendly against Ghana on November 17 in Abu Dhabi.

Switzerland’s other Group G opponents are Serbia and record five-time World Cup champions Brazil.

The Swiss will be making their 12th FIFA World Cup appearance when kicks off in Qatar on November 20 and ends on December 18.

Switzerland has reached the FIFA World Cup round of 16 in their last two appearances.

However, Switzerland has not reached the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals since 1954.
