Senegal coach Cisse extends contract ahead of FIFA World Cup

Coach Aliou Cisse has extended his contract with Senegal just in the nick of time before the 2022 FIFA World Cup kick-off.

Senegal Football Federation (SFS) has confirmed renewing the contract of the Teranga Lions coach for two more years.

Senegal Sports Minister Yankhoba Diatara and FSF President Augustin Senghor presided over the contract renewal ceremony on Thursday.

“His contract has been upgraded and extended until 2024,” a statement from the federation reads.

WORLD CUP MANDATE FOR CISSE

The coach has been tasked with ensuring the Teranga Lions’ impressive showing at the World Cup.

Cisse has since promised to deliver the goods for Senegal at the FIFA World Cup.

The African champions are likely to be without inspirational skipper Sadio Mane.

The former Liverpool star suffered an injury while playing for Bayern Munich in a Bundesliga match last week. Senghor has since welcomed the upgrading of the contract with Cissé.

LONG-SERVING COACH

SFS hired the former Senegal defender in 2015 on an initial two-year contract which was extended over the years.

Cisse is one of Africa’s longest-serving national coaches in recent years. He led Senegal to their first-ever AFCON title for the delayed edition of 2021 in Cameroon earlier this year after beating Egypt in the final.

Cisse and his men made it a double when the Lions of Teranga ousted the Pharaohs again in the World Cup play-off.

Senegal are in Group A at the FIFA World Cup alongside Netherlands, Qatar and Ecuador.
