Dutch doctor-cum-striker signs for Malawi’s Big Bullets

Malawi’s top women’s football club Nyasa Big Bullets has signed a doctor-cum striker on a short-term contract.

Nyasa Big Bullets women’s football team unveiled Anne van Els on Thursday in Blantyre. A statement from Bullets says Van Els has joined the club on a four-month contract.

The Dutch striker has joined Bullets as a free agent until March 2023. Anne van Els works as a paediatrician at Malawi referral Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital.

WHAT COMPELLED HER TO SIGN FOR BIG BULLETS

She told Bullets’ website she was compelled to join the team after watching their two matches at a packed Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.

The Dutch lady said the atmosphere and the huge following that Bullets commands convinced her to put pen to paper.

“Big Bullets is a big and special club to a lot of Malawians,” she told the Bullets website. “I am very excited and honoured to join this club and start playing for the women’s team. I hope I can contribute to the club’s success.”

NYASA BULLETS COACH WELCOMES NEW STRIKER

Bullets women’s head coach, Maggie Chombo, said she was excited to have the Dutch striker on board.

“Her arrival shows how much women’s football is developing in the country. It is pleasing to see how happy she is to join Bullets,” Chombo-Sadiki added.

The 34-year-old started her football career at the age of 15 at SV Venray’s first women’s team.

She later moved to Door Vriendschap Verenigd Amsterdam, playing for the second women’s side, where she won the championship in 2016.

Bullets women’s team were formerly called Blantyre Zero and plays in the FAM league.

Bullets management bought the status of Blantyre Zero in conformity with CAF requirements for all teams that want to compete in the continental championships.

The 16-time men’s Super League champions Bullets crashed out of the Champions League race for this year after losing to Simba SC at home and away.

The Blantyre-based team is a giant that has won the men’s domestic league for a fourth consecutive season.
