Former Pirates duo Shonga, Mulenga on target in Zambia

Former Orlando Pirates duo Justin Shonga and Augustine Mulenga were on target for their respective clubs in the Zambian Super League most recently.

Shonga came off the bench to salvage a point for Nkwazi on Wednesday, the same day Mulenga scored for Napsa.

The ex-Orlando Pirates and Cape Town City striker, Shonga, came on after the hour mark to snatch a 1-1 home draw against Prison Leopards in Lusaka.

Shonga scored Nkwazi’s equaliser in the 73rd minute to cancel Prison’s lead they had taken in the 56th minute through Isaac Ngoma.

The Chipolopolo striker took his tally to four goals in nine matches played since rejoining Nkwazi in September as a free agent after six years abroad that also took him to Egypt, where he had a brief spell at Ismailia.

SHONGA IN GOLDEN BOOT RACE

It was Shonga’s first goal in four games since Nkwazi’s 2-0 home win over Chambishi on October 22.

Shonga is now four goals behind pacesetter Kennedy Musonda of Power Dynamos at the end of round 13  games played in the 2022/2023 FAZ Super League campaign.

Nkwazi remains one place above the bottom four relegation zone at number 14 with 13 points.

And sitting two places above Shonga’s club is Mulenga’s Napsa Stars, who suffered their straight defeat following a 2-1 home loss in Lusaka to Chambishi.

Mulenga scored Napsa’s face-saver in the 78th minute in a match 15th placed Chambishi were enjoying a two-nil halftime lead in a match he played the full 90 minutes for the Lusaka club.

The goal was Mulenga’s second since he joined Napsa six games ago as a free agent since leaving Amazulu at the close of the last campaign.

Mulenga’s first goal before Wednesday was on his debut on October 19 in Napsa’s 2-1 home win over nine-time champions Zesco United.

Interestingly, Napsa is coached by other former Pirates in the shape of ex-midfielder Perry Mutapa, who successfully guided them to promotion this season after just one term in the second tier.
