Roger Feutmba: What Cameroon must do at the World Cup

Former Mamelodi Sundowns legendary midfielder Roger Feutmba has shared his opinion on what Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions must do to overcome their tough Group C opponents at the 2022 Qatar FIFA World Cup.

The Indomitable Lions will play Switzerland, Serbia and Brazil, opponents who have done well in the past editions of the World Cup.

HOW CAMEROON CAN SURVIVE

The African giants will play their first game against Switzerland on November 24, then face Serbia four days later before battling with five-time world champions Brazil on December 2.

Feutmba says Cameroon are in a tough group; hence, their progression in the tournament depends on how they would manage their first match against Switzerland before facing Serbia.

“Yeah, even though football is an unpredictable sport, it is going to be difficult for Cameroon in their group,” Feutmba told FARPost.

“In football, anything can happen. With the squad they have, it will be hard for them.

“But I believe if they can manage the first game well, they will definitely do well. It will all depend on how they start the tournament because they are in a tough group.”

“Switzerland are very tough; a very important game for them because results there will determine what happens throughout the tournament.

“They do not want to meet Brazil while desperate for a win to survive. They must avoid losing the first game then face Serbia in a highly motivated mood. Then anything can happen from there.”

ON SAMUEL ETO’O COMMENTS

Feutmba also weighed in on the Cameroon FA president Samuel Eto’o recent bold statements, predicting a good World Cup run for the Indomitable Lions.

The former Barcelona star also predicted that Cameroon would win the World Cup championship.

Feutmba says Eto’o must have made those statements to remind the players of the importance of representing their country.

“I do not think Samuel Eto’o is putting pressure on the team. He is just making them realize the importance of playing at the World Cup. I think his comments should motivate the team to do well,” he says.

Cameroon have been to eight World Cup editions the first being in 1982, and their best-ever finish was in 1992 when they reached the quarterfinals.

Feutmba was named in the Cameroon squad for 1990 followed by AFCON the same year and the next edition of the continental championship.

The 53-year-old was an exciting left-footed midfielder for Sundowns. He won the PSL Players’ Player of the Season in 1999, two seasons after guiding Downs to three consecutive titles, with the first coming in 1997.
