SuperSport United CEO Stanley Matthews says they may be prompted to sell rookies Luke Fleurs and Jamie Webber in a bid to boost their coffers.
Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates are said to have already presented their respective offers, with two European clubs also understood to be interested.
The Gavin Hunt coached-side is one of the few clubs in South Africa that have conducted successful business in terms of selling players to boost their purses.
During the last window, they pocketed millions following the sale of Teboho Mokoena, Sipho Mbule and goalie Ronwen Williams.
They also sold Grant Kekana and Aubrey Modiba Mamelodi Sundowns.
The rookies, Fleurs and Webber, have not enjoyed much game time this season under Hunt, which has left the club considering selling them.
POSSIBLE MOVES
CEO Matthews revealed that Sundowns are not in the mix to sign Fleurs but confirmed that Chiefs and Pirates have made inquiries.
“Mamelodi Sundowns have already taken six from me. I think they are going to pause and breathing room a little bit.
“The only player that clubs are chasing at the moment is Luke Fleurs. He is young and has not won a trophy with us. Sometimes we like to sell players after winning a trophy with us.
“So Luke may be a player we may lose alongside Webber, who has attracted interest in Europe.
“As for Luke, we have one offer from overseas from one of my former coaches and two local clubs that have made inquiries officially and will have to tell the board, but I can confirm that at the moment, we will not let go of any player before July.
“Will see what happens with him. He is a guy that we can potentially sell at the end of the year if the right offer comes. If not, he is still with us for another three and half years on contract.”
LACK OF GAME TIME
Fleurs and Webber were regular players then under Kaitano Tembo, who believe in youngsters.
Unfortunately, under Hunt, game time has not been guaranteed, as the former Kaizer Chiefs tactician fuses junior and senior players.
“He is a good young defender, unfortunately for him, Gavin wants the experience of Thulani Hlatshwayo, and he is young,” he added.
“Maybe he is not playing as much as he should, but he is the future, and you saw in the Olympics he was one of the few players that were in the national team.
“We see his capacity, and definitely at his age, I do not see any current young centre-backs in the PSL that has more caps than Luke at his age.”
Matthews added: “So we know that we have a gem in him for the future, and again, there is a limit I can offer him to the club in terms of contract improvement.
“I’m willing to pay, but if his demands are too much for us, we have to move on, and that is what we will discuss with Luke in the coming months.
“For now, he has to fight for his place like Sboniso Gaxa did when Kaitano Tembo and Ricardo Katza were on their primes, he made it happen, and Luke must push Hlatshwayo out, this is football.”
