Themba Zwane needs no coaching, admits Hugo Broos

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos says he is not about to teach Mamelodi Sundowns talisman Themba Zwane anything.

For a long time, Broos had resisted calling up Zwane for the national team citing his age.

However, Broos made a U-turn in September, calling the 32-year-old for the first time.

Themba Zwane responded emphatically, scoring a brace in the 4-0 win over Sierra Leone and making Bafana tick.

‘Mshishi’ also showed his class in Bafana’s 2-1 comeback win over Mozambique on Thursday, providing the assist for Bongokuhle Hlongwane’s second goal.

Now, Broos waxes lyrical about the Sundowns playmaker and has since told FARPost that the man needs no coaching.

“The advantage with Themba is that he’s an experienced player. This is a young team we have. You’ll see the games we played with him; he’s very important to us,” Broos told FARPost.

The Belgian further described how Zwane plays in the national team. But he admits that the way he plays has nothing to do with his instructions.

“He plays between the lines. He’s very smart. How to do it, I don’t have to tell him.

“I don’t tell him; I ask him to do it. He knows where he has to go,” added Broos.

He revealed that in the three games Zwane has featured, he gave him a free role.

“Most of the time, his position is free. We can give him the ball. He can keep the ball, so he becomes very important to us.”

Broos has repeatedly admitted he was mistaken to omit Zwane initially. On Saturday, he said his plan when he arrived was to give opportunities to younger players.

“I’ve always said, Zwane, no problem, but it’s a guy of 32 years old. When we go to AFCON, he will be nearly 35, so I looked more into the future, but we didn’t find him.

“I said last time, ‘only fools don’t change their mind’, so I phoned Themba, and I have to agree.

“I also said it after the game against Sierra Leone; this is maybe the missing link; this guy can bring us to higher levels. Where he plays, he’s smart. He’s a good player, so yes, I agree with that.

“You see in the games against Sierra Leone and Mozambique, the role he played in this team. You can only be happy with that.”

Zwane will likely play a part when Bafana Bafana take on Angola on Sunday at the Mbombela Stadium. Kick-off is 3pm.
