2022 FIFA World Cup: Qatar’s bans and guidelines that upset fans
While Qatar people might be over the moon that they are hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup, visiting fans have been left upset by several bans and strict guidelines.
Qatar is the first Middle East country to host the competition. And rules around alcohol, sex, and the LGBQT+ community have stirred controversies.
Here’s a list of things banned in Qatar during the FIFA World Cup 2022.
NO PORN AND SEX TOYS
Being found with porn or sex toys could attract a heavy fine or jail term. Qatar isn’t allowing its visitors to carry these things into the country.
SEX BAN
Football fans have been warned that extramarital sexual escapades during the FIFA World Cup could land them in jail for seven years.
LAST-MINUTE ALCOHOL BAN
Initially, Qatar agreed with FIFA that alcohol would be sold to fans in selected areas inside stadiums. However, this all changed two days before the World Cup’s commencement.
FIFA announced that no alcohol would be allowed in stadiums due to their agreement with Qatari officials. The announcement caused a stir on social media among football fans.
NO PUBLIC DISPLAY OF AFFECTION
Qatar is an Islamic country. And in most Islamic countries, public display of affection is viewed as inappropriate behaviour. Qatari officials have argued that the world should comply with this rule as a sign of respect to the Qatar public.
STANCE ON THE LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY
Homosexuality is deemed a criminal offence in Qatar. Leading up to the FIFA World Cup, this issue stirred up much controversy around the World.
England was one of the federations willing to make a statement on the World stage. By allowing their captain, Harry Kane, to wear a One Love armband in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community.
However, England went back on their word to try to protect any England players from being banned from the World Cup.

Suppose you are a fan of pork products; too bad! Pork is banned in the Islamic country.
NO RELIGIOUS BOOKS
Qatar is not allowing any form of a religious book for travellers coming to the FIFA World Cup 2022.
