The five players who impressed in the DStv Premiership so far

The DStv Premiership have taken an early mid-season break due to the 2022 FIFA World Cup taking place in Qatar.

Mamelodi Sundowns, the Premiership’s defending champions are at the summit of the log after 12 games, followed by newcomers Richards Bay with Kaizer Chiefs, SuperSport United and Orlando Pirates chasing the leading pack.

After an eventful first round of the 2022/23 campaign, FARPost writer Tshepo Rabothe picks players who have been outstanding for their respective teams.

Salim Jamal Magoola

The Richards Bay’s number one goalie, Magoola, has been impressive for the club in their maiden season in the top flight.

The Ugandan international has played a pivotal role as the last line of defence for Richards Bay.

The 27-year old shot stopper joined the Natal Rich Boys at the start of the season and managed to keep nine cleansheets while conceding just six goals after 13 games played so far.

Richards Bay have the second-best defensive record with six goals conceded after Sundowns, who have conceded five.

Miguel Timm

The Pirates anchorman, Timm, proved his doubters wrong with consistent performances under head coach José Riviero.

Timm joined the Buccaneers on a free transfer at the start of season after parting company with Marumo Gallants.

The 30-year old central midfielder’s impressive displays for Pirates has seen him earn a Bafana Bafana call up.

He was part of the Hugo Broos’ 23-men squad that played back-to-back friendlies against Mozambique and Angola at Mbombela Stadium last week.

Timm played a vital role in midfield as Pirates won the 2022 MTN8 title, beating AmaZulu in the final. He walked away with the Man of the Match award in Durban.

Ronwen Williams

The Bafana Bafana’s number penned a deal with Mamelodi Sundowns from the cross-town rivals SuperSport United ahead of the 2022/23 season.

Williams has had a flying start to life at Sundowns after starting all the 12 leagues games for the club.

He has only conceded five goals while keeping eight clean sheets.

The Gqeberha-born star has managed to keep high-profile goalies such as Dennis Onyango, Kennedy Mweene, Riyaad Pieterse and Jody February out of the starting line-up at Downs.

Nkosinathi Sibisi

The hard-tackling defender was signed by Pirates from Golden Arrows at the beginning of the season.

Sibisi has been rock solid at the back for the Soweto giants and, like Timm, helped the club lift the MTN8 trophy.

Bhodlela, as he’s affectionately known, has featured in 17 games in all competitions for the Sea Robbers, scoring once.

Grant Margeman

Margeman, known for his ambidextrous ability has been an integral part of the SuperSport set up under Gavin Hunt.

The Ajax Cape Town youth product is on a two-season loan at Matsatsantsa from Sundowns.

The 24-year old midfielder has made 10 appearances for SuperSport and chipped in with two goals from a deep-lying central midfield position.
