Darren Smith’s first words on his return to Finland

South Africa-born forward Darren Smith has opened up about his return to Finland after penning a two-year deal with FC Inter Turku. 

The 26-year-old footballer was officially unveiled by the Finnish top-flight side on Thursday evening for the 2023 season. 

Smith had successful stints with FC Honka and Ekenas in Finland before joining Moroccan side FAR Rabat in August 2022.

In South Africa, he represented the likes of Ajax Cape Town Youth, AmaZulu, Vasco Da Gama, Santos, SuperSport United and Ubuntu Cape Town.

The talented goalscorer joins Inter with so much joy and reckons that he appreciates the opportunity given by the club to return to Finland.

SMITH SPEAKS…

“It’s great to be back in Finland. I always knew the last time I left that I would be back here. It was only a matter of time, but I am very happy that it happened so soon,” he told the club’s media.

“Inter have always been a club I have admired. Here, the operations are professional and the facilities are really top-notch, I’m happy to get the opportunity here.

“I’m going to do my best for the team. Scoring goals and helping the team to win games is probably the most important thing.”

Smith went on to outline his goal at the “My goal is to help Inter as high as possible. And I know very well that this it’s not so individual-centred, it’s a team sport.”

His goal-scoring skills, strengths and his edgy movement abilities make him stand out.

Meanwhile, Inter head coach Jarkko Wiss also shared his thoughts on his latest signing, Smith.

“Smith is a really fast striker who knows how to time his runs between the lines. He finishes with high quality and is an avid presser,” said Wiss.  

“Characterized by simple link play with minimal touches. He is familiar with Finland and the series is familiar. It’s really great to have a long preseason with him after a tough season in Morocco.”
