Percy Tau makes substitute appearance in Al Ahly win

Percy Tau played as a substitute for Al Ahly as they scrapped to the Egyptian Cup semifinal on Sunday night.

Al Ahly coach Marcel Koller introduced Tau late in the game before they beat Mokawloon Al Arab SC 4-3 on post-match penalties.

Tau is yet to command a regular place in the Cairo-based team with most of his appearances being from the bench.

HUGO BROOS’ CALL FOR TAU

The limited game-time has prompted Bafana Bafana mentor Hugo Broos to urge the forward to strive for more game-time at Al Ahly or elsewhere if he is to crawl his way back into the national team.

The former Mamemodi Sundowns star Tau was dropped for the international friendlies Bafana played against Angola and Mozambique earlier this month.

On Sunday, Tau was not involved in the goals, including the penalties which eventually decided the contest.

The two teams had shared the spoils at 1-1 in regulation time of the quarterfinal meeting.

The game descended into extra-time before the two teams were separated by the penalty lotteries.

Al Ahly had started the game strongly and scored through Karim Fouad in the 18th minute after receiving a well measured cross in the box.

The men for Swiss boss Koller men sought to hold on to their lead and thought they would cross the line.

However, Al Mokawloon snatched a late leveler through John Okoli’s close range effort.

EXTRA-TIME AND POST-MATCH PENALTIES

The game ended one-all in regulation time to pay the way for extra time which failed to separate the two teams.

Penalties eventually broke the tie with Al Ahly converting all their attempts whereas Al Makawloon missed two attempts.

Yaser El Hanafi, Aliou Dieng, Mohamed Eldemerdash and Rami Rabia converted for Al Ahly.

Al Mokawloon Al Arabs scored from the spot through Joseph Ochaya, Amir Abed and Ahmed Eldin.

Omar Fayed and Forouck Kabore had their attempts saved by Al Ahly keeper El Shenawy.

It is not clear as to who Al Ahly would meet next in the semifinals which will also involve rivals Zamalek, Smouha and Pyramids.

In other games, Bafana forward Fagrie Lakay was in the starting line-up for Pyramids as they beat National Bank 1-0 courtesy of Ramadan Sobhi’s goal.

The other quarterfinal games saw Zamalek defeat Al Masry 1-0 whereas Smouha saw off Suez 2-0.
