Former Chiefs striker shares Amakhosi Kappa memories
As Kaizer Chiefs prepare to rekindle their affair with Kappa, former striker Wedson Nyirenda shared his memories in the Amakhosi iconic jersey.
Kappa is returning as Chiefs technical sponsor for the first time since their eight-year relationship ended with the Italian sports apparel maker in 1996.
Nike has been Chiefs’ technical sponsor since 2000, and the 23-year relationship ends as the contract is set to expire next year
Nyirenda played for Chief from 1993 to 1995 after joining them from the Kitwe-based, six-time Zambian champions Power Dynamos.
The ex-Baroka and Zambia coach, Nyirenda told FARPost that he was very excited to hear the news that Kappa was coming back to kit Chiefs.
NYIRENDA HAS FOND MEMORIES IN CHIEFS KAPPA JERSEY
“I love Kaizer Chiefs, and the first thing that always accompanies my memories is the Kappa brand and the exploits we did at that time were glorious,” Nyirenda said.
“When I saw Madam Jessica Motaung signing for that brand, my heart jumped, and I remembered the great men of soccer in South Africa I played with and against.
“Talk of Kaizer Chiefs; Doctor Khumalo, Captain Neil Tovey, Nick Shaw, Lucas Radebe, Dick Hamukola, Maringa, Nstie Maphike, Rudolf Siale, Trevor Mthimkulu, Wellington Manyathi, And Young Lawrence Mooki.
“And, of course, facing our [Orlando Pirates] rivals Mark Fish, Gavin Lane, Innocent Buthelezi, John Moeti etc.”
Chiefs won 11 trophies in the Kappa brand between 1986 and 1996, including four league titles, but Nyirenda didn’t win a championship medal during his spell at Amakhosi.
However, Nyirenda won two silverware that included the 1994 BP Top 8 title plus runners-up finish in the same competition in 1995.
Nyirenda’s other winners’ medal in a Kappa jersey came in the 1994 Iwisa Spectacular and reached one 1995 Bob Save semifinal.
“Many great memories come. You can imagine that I still have the black Kaizer Chiefs Kappa tracksuit. Except I have given out most playing kit, and some were just stolen,” added Nyirenda.
