Why relegation to third tier was an ‘eye-opener’ for Jomo Sono

Jomo Cosmos owner and coach Matsilele “Jomo” Sono has explained why his side’s relegation from the Motsepe Foundation Championship to the ABC Motsepe League was an “eye-opener”.

The renowned club, Cosmos is known for having produced prominent names in football including Pitso Mosimane, Arthur Zwane, and Helman Mkhalele to mention a few.

Ezenkosi, unfortunately, dropped to the third tier with two games to spare last season.

However, the former Orlando Pirates star, Sono says his club’s relegation to the third tier was a blessing in disguise as he has since identified immense talent in the amateur league.

COSMOS’ RELEGATION HAS BEEN AN ‘EYE-OPENER’ FOR JOMO SONO

“For me, it’s been an eye-opener to go down,” Sono told journalists during the World Football Summit Africa in Durban.

“Maybe people are feeling sorry for me, but I’m happy.

“One thing that has surprised me, the talent which I see there is unbelievable but if I was in NFD [now Motsepe Foundation Championship], I wouldn’t see that.

“I’ve identified talent and taken some players. Those are good players but they need coaching.”

The 67-year-old went on to explain why he is no longer watching the DStv Premiership and also disclosed his awful experience to date in the ABC Motsepe League.

‘I DON’T WATCH PREMIER SOCCER LEAGUE’

“I will say something that you won’t believe, I watch the third division, I don’t watch the Premier Soccer League,” he added.

“If I watch PSL, what will I benefit from it? Let me stay where I am.

“But our pitches are very poor, at times you feel like a cow will cross over the field but what will I do because I love football, I will play.

“God sent me for a reason. To be honest I am happy where I am.”
