Ex-Pirates striker Shonga scores 5th goal in the Zambian league

Ex-Orlando Pirates striker Justin Shonga on Saturday scored his 5th goal of the season for Nkwazi to inspire the Zambian club to their third league win.

Shonga returned to Zambia in September after six years in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) when he rejoined his childhood club Nkwazi.

The Chipolopolo striker played for Nkwazi before leaving the Lusaka club in 2017 for Pirates.

On December 3, Shonga helped Nkwazi to a 3-0 home FAZ Super League win over promoted side Lumwana Radiants in Lusaka.

Shonga scored Nkwazi’s final goal in the 75th minute to increase his goal tally for the 2022/2023 season to 5 goals from eleven games he has played since joining Nkwazi three months ago.

The former Sekhukhune United and Cape Town City hitman scored a brace on his debut on October 2 in Nkwazi’s 4-0 away win over bottom placed Buildcon in the Lusaka clubs’ first league victory of the season.

Shonga’s other goals for Nkwazi have now come in two out of the sides’ last three league wins this season.

His other goal came in a 1-1 home draw against Prison Leopards on November 16.

Shonga is now four goals behind current 2022/2023 FAZ Super League top scorer Kennedy Musonda of Power Dynamos, who has nine goals at the end of sixteen games played this season.

However, despite Nkwazi’s victory, they stay put in the top bracket of the bottom four relegation zone at number 15 with 16 points from as many matches played.

Promoted side Lumwana are just below Nkwazi at number 16 on 15 points.

Meanwhile, Shonga is the only former PSL player currently campaigning in the Zambia Super League who is enjoying some prolific form.

His former Pirates clubmate and midfielder Augustine Mulenga has two goals for Napsa Stars.

Former Jomo Cosmos midfielder Clifford Mulenga also has two goals for Forest Rangers.
