Wes Brown warns Manchester United against giving winger Ronaldo’s number 7 shirt

Former Manchester United defender Wes Brown has warned the club against the temptation of giving rising winger Alejandro Garnacho the famous number 7 jersey.

Ronaldo recently left the club and donned the number 7 jersey after taking it from Edinson Cavani.

Cristiano Ronaldo had previously worn the same number during Sir Alex Ferguson’s tenure as United manager.

However, after the termination of his contract last month, the jersey is up for the taking.

Garnacho is on a steady rise and looks likely to become a significant player for Manchester United.

IT IS TOO EARLY, SAYS BROWN

Nonetheless, Brown fears it will be too early for Garnacho to inherit the iconic number from Ronaldo.

“Maybe not just yet, and I don’t mean that in a bad way,” Brown told UK publication Metro UK when asked if Garnacho should inherit the number 7 shirt.

“He’s a great young player. I love his attitude on the pitch, how he wants it, and how he attacks.

“He wants to do well for himself and the team. I think the manager [Erik ten Hag] has done well to hold off on him for quite a long time in that first period of the season.

“But that has helped him, getting that bit of anger out to show that he’s good enough to play in this team. Now it’s just about managing that.”

United’s prestigious number 7 has been worn by many iconic names. George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, David Beckham, and Cristiano Ronaldo have each donned the number.

“There have been so many legends that have proudly worn the iconic crest of this club, and there’s plenty more to come.

“But the number seven has become immortalised thanks to the sheer determination, grit and creativity of those wearing it. We’re just excited to see who is up next,” read an article on the Manchester United website.
