Coaches who parted ways with their teams after World Cup exit

With a failure to live up to expectations, the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar has seen many top coaches vacate their posts.

The World Cup had produced several upsets, which some of the highly-rated nations exiting the showpiece in the group stages

Otis Ntshangase of FARPost looks into detail how the seven coaches fared at the tournament.

TITE [BRAZIL]

Ex-Brazil manager Tite during a match

Tite stepped down from his post after Brazil lost 4-2 to Croatia on penalties in the quarterfinals.

The match had initially ended in a one-all draw. The five-time world champions, Brazil were one of the favourites to lift the title. The South American started their campaign on a bright note winning their first two group matches before losing to Cameroon.

Tite was appointed Brazil manager in 2016. And at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, Brazil were knocked out of the competition in the quarterfinals and in 2019 they won the Copa America.

LOUIS VAN GAAL [NETHERLANDS]

Ex Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal

The former Manchester United manager left his Netherlands post after a 4-3 defeat to Argentina on penalties in the quarterfinals following a two-all draw.

The Dutch exited the competition without a loss in open play. They registered three victories and two draws.

Van Gaal came out of retirement to try to revive the team following a disappointing performance in the 2020 Euros.

GERARDO MARTINO [MEXICO]

Former Mexico manager Gerardo Martino

Martino resigned after Mexico failed to qualify for the knockout stages. The South Americans exited the competition on goal difference. They were on par with Poland with four points.

Mexico registered one win, one draw and suffered one defeat. Martino linked with the nation in 2019 after guiding Atlanta United to win Major League Soccer Cup.

ROBERTO MARTINEZ [BELGIUM]

Martinez left his Belgium post following a disastrous campaign in Qatar. The former Everton boss had been in charge of the side since 2016.

The Spaniard led the Red Devils to a third-place finish in the 2018 World Cup and in the quarterfinals in the 2020 European Championship.

OTTO ADDO [GHANA]

Addo quit his job after the Black Stars exited in the group stages. The 2010 quarterfinalists were crushed out after recording one victory and suffered two defeats.

The former Ghana player confirmed that he will return to Borussia Dortmund to be a talent coach.

PAULO BENTO [SOUTH KOREA]

Ex-South Korea manager Paulo Bento

Bento resigned as the South Korea coach following a humiliating 4-1 defeat against Brazil. The Asians surprised many people as they defeated Portugal 2-1 in their last group stage match to seal qualification to the Round of 16.

LUIS ENRIQUE [SPAIN]

Former Spain manager Luis Enrique

The former Barcelona manager was sacked following a defeat 3-0 defeat to Morocco on spot-kicks. The Spanish FA confirmed that Enrique will be replaced by under-21 coach Luis de la Fuente.

Enrique guided the 2010 World champions to the semis of the Euro 2020 and the final of the 2021 Nations League.
