Why Orlando Pirates could call off R3.5m deal for Cameroonian striker
Orlando Pirates are toying with the idea of calling off the reported R3,5 million deal to sign Cameroonian striker Souaibou Marou from Coton Sport.
The highly-rated forward was part of the Cameroon national team that participated in the ongoing 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The Indomitable Lions were dumped out in the group stages.
Various media reports in Cameroon have suggested that Pirates agreed to a deal worth millions with Coton Sport to bring Marou to South Africa.
However, the 22-year old attacker’s agent Mike Maakab has blasted the manner in which the financial terms between the two clubs were leaked.
Pirates are believed to be be unhappy with how the personal details of the deal were made available to the public with Makaab explaining that the agreement might be called off.
WHY THE DEAL COULD BE CALLED OFF
“The statement was released prematurely and the deal hasn’t been concluded,” Mike Maakab said on Gagasi FM.
“We are very annoyed and I know that Orlando Pirates is very annoyed because that’s not how the chairman [Dr Irvin Khoza] operates.
“Obviously, what has happened is that somewhere along the lines, a source within the club or someone connected to a source within Coton Sport has released the details of the deal.
“And that’s not how Orlando Pirates operates and that’s not how we work as a professional agency.
“So the deal hasn’t been done, I can assure you. The chances are that the deal won’t be done based on the fact that it was released in a very unprofessional manner. So we not sure where we going from here,” added Maakab.
The Buccaneers have struggled to find consistency in front of goal, therefore beefing up the striking force was always inevitable.
Pirates currently have Kermit Erasmus, Kwame Peprah, Beinvenu Eva Nga, Zakhele Lepasa, Evidence Makgopa and the newly-signed Ndumiso Mabena in the frontline department.
However, none of them have made a real goal scoring impact.
In the 2022/22 DStv Premiership season, Pirates have only managed to score nine goals in 13 games played in the league so far.
It remains to be seen whether Pirates and Coton Sport will negotiate a fresh deal for Souaibou Marou or they will pull the plugs of the negotiations.
