Gavin Hunt recalls what ‘famous coach’ told him about coaching

SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt has divulged what a “famous coach” told him about coaching at the highest level.

The 58-year-old tactician, Hunt recalled this when he spoke about the time Kaizer Chiefs and Chippa United showed him the exit door.

After he had been on the touchline for 26 years, Hunt experienced his first sacking when Amakhosi sent him packing in 2021 after inconsistent displays.

Later in the same year, he was fired by Chippa United after spending only five months with the Gqeberha-based club. He remained unattached for seven months before rejoining SuperSport in July 2022.

Hunt says he was told by the coach, whom he didn’t reveal his name, that one can never coach until they’re sacked.

“I’ll say one thing, a very famous coach told me this,” he said.

“He asked, ‘you think you can coach?’

“I said I’m going to try. He says you can never coach until you get fired.

“And I’ve been fired twice; now I’ve learnt to coach.”

Hunt is currently in his second stint with Matsatsantsa a Pitori, as he has previously coached the club from 2007 to 2013.

His first spell with the Pretoria outfit was prosperous, winning three league titles and the Nedbank Cup before he moved to the now-defunct Bidvest Wits.

Hunt spent almost seven years at Wits and led them to the league title, Telkom Knockout (set to be called Carling Knockout Cup) and MTN8.

The Cape Town-born coach has also mentored Moroka Swallows, Black Leopards, Hellenic and Seven Stars.

He is regarded as one of the most successful tacticians in South Africa, with a total of eight major trophies under his belt.

Hunt, a five-time PSL Coach of the Season, is level on four league titles with the likes of the late Ted Dumitru and Gordon Igesund.

Pitso Mosimane is the only coach with more league triumphs [five] than Hunt in SA’s topflight.
