Louis Van Gaal, Luis Enrique on Belgium’s radar

Media reports from Belgium indicate they might settle on another foreign-born coach, with speculation that two coaches fresh from Qatar are considered for the vacant Red Devils job.

The Belgium national team job fell vacant a fortnight ago after Spaniard Roberto Martinez’s resignation after six years in charge.

This is after the World’s second-highest-ranked sides’ spectacular preliminary stage elimination from the ongoing 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

According to clubbruggezone.be, the legendary Dutch coach Louis Van Gaal may just cross the border to Belgium after quitting as the Netherlands boss following Holland’s quarterfinal exit over the weekend.

Van Gaal is not the only foreign–born candidate on the list fresh from the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Spaniard Luis Enrique, who stepped down as Spain’s coach following the 2010 champions’ last 16 exit, is also reportedly being considered for the job.

The two names being considered are both local.

They include Belgium’s 1994 FIFA World Cup star goalkeeper Michel Preud’homme who is currently sporting director at Standard Liege.

Former Manchester City and Belgium defender Vincent Kompany is the other prospect for the Belgium job.

Kompany is currently coaching at the English Championship club, Burnley.

Meanwhile, the Belgium FA has set up a four-member task force to look into the possible candidate for the job.

Expectations were high for Belgium in Qatar following their exploits in Russia 2018, where they finished third after a 100 per cent record in the group stages until they were stopped in their tracts at the semifinal stage by eventual winners France.

But nothing went according to plan in Qatar, where they won one, drew one and lost one, with the highlight coming on match day two in Group F when they were beaten 2-0 by semifinalist Morocco.

Belgium finished third in Group F with 4 points, one behind semifinalist Croatia, while Morocco advanced to the last 16 with 7 points.
