Karim Benzema retires from international football

Real Madrid and France striker Karim Benzema has announced his retirement from international football with immediate effect.

The 2022 Ballon D’Or winner, Benzema was part of the initial squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. But a thigh injury ruled him out for just a few days before the tournament began.

Benzema, who turned 35 on Monday, 19 December surprisingly recovered quickly from the injury and was reportedly invited back to the squad but declined.

Before the final Benzema had sent a message of support to his France teammates before the defeat against Argentina.

France lost 4-2 on penalties in Sunday’s final against Argentina. The game had ended 3-all after extra-time.

“I’ve made the efforts and mistakes that were necessary for me to be where I am today and I’m proud of it. I’ve written my story and ours comes to an end,” he said in an Instagram post on Monday.

The veteran striker scored 37 goals in 97 appearances for France.

KARIM BENZEMA AND DIDIER DESCHAMPS RIFT

According to reports, Benzema has experienced another falling out with coach Didier Deschamps.

Deschamps elected not to call upon a replacement for Benzema and also declined to comment when asked if the player would be coming back for the final.

“I don’t really want to answer that question. Next question. I do apologise,” said Deschamps when asked about the striker.

The striker himself appeared to pour cold water on the idea of a return with an Instagram post written “Not interested”.

The reports further suggest that Benzema was unhappy with how he was treated when he got an injury. He reportedly also wanted to hang around with the squad in Qatar but the coach decided to send him home. He bows out with 97 caps, scoring 37 goals.

SUPPORT FOR LES BLEUS

Meanwhile the French national team coach continues to receive more support despite the final defeat.

French president Emmanuel Macron consoled the players in the dressing room who were visibly heartbroken. Visuals have also shown the president trying to console star player Kylian Mbappe.
