2015 Amajimbos World Cup players: Where are they now?

Amajimbos made history in 2015 after qualifying for their first ever FIFA World Cup. Seven years later, FARPost writer Otis Ntshangase looks at where these players are right now in their careers.

Only six players out of the 2015 Under 17 World Cup squad have done on to make their senior Bafana Bafana debuts.

And 12 out of 21 squad members are playing in the PSL for DStv Premiership and Motsepe Foundation Championship teams.

Five players are clubless with two playing abroad and two play in the third-tier league; ABC Motsepe League.

PLAYERS IN THE PSL

REEVE FROSLER

The Kaizer Chiefs defender has proved to be a quality and experienced player.

He has represented the national team at the Olympics and has four senior caps to his name.

SANELE TSHABALALA

The 24-year-old goalkeeper is playing for Swallows FC. In 2022/23 season he has made two appearances and won the Match of the Match once after superb performance.

However, he is yet to make a senior appearance for the national team.

RIZAAZ ISMAIL, DYLAN STOFFELS AND ATHENKOSI DLALA

The trio are on the books of Pretoria Callies.

Ismail, Stoffels and Dlala linked with the club from Maritzburg United, Bizana Pondo Chiefs and Baroka FC respectively ahead of the current season.

Ismail and Stoffels have never presented the national team at senior level, whilst Dlala has only one cap.

KATLEGO MOHAMME

Mohamme is a Mamelodi Sundowns player. He is yet to settle at the club,.

Last season he was loaned out to Swallows FC and only made six appearances. He has zero senior caps.

THENDO MUKUMELA

The defender is still trying to settle in at AmaZulu after a switch from Cape Town Spurs. He has only made four appearances for the club in all competitions and has six senior caps.

KEANU CUPIDO AND KHANYISA MAYO

The duo are playing for Cape Town City. Both players have established their place in the City squad. So far this season, Cupido has nine appearances, whilst Mayo has 12. In the national team, Mayo has four caps and Cupido has nun.

MONDLI MPOTO

The Royal AM goalkeeper has struggled for some game time this season at the club. The 24-year-old has only made three appearance and has zero senior caps.

NOTHA NGCOBO

The left-footed player is with Platinum City Rovers. The former Sundowns player once went to trials in Germany but failed to impress. He has zero senior caps.

SIBONGAKONKE MBATHA

The attacking midfielder finds himself at University of Pretoria. The 24-year-old once played in the Indian Super League for ATK Mohun Bagan. He has not featured for the national team at senior level.

SPHEPHELO SITHOLE AND KOBAMELO KODISANG

Sithole and Kodisang are the only two players from 2015 World Cup squad who play overseas. Sithole who plays for Belenenses SAD has three senior caps, whilst Kodisang who plays for Morereinse on loan from Braga has not featured for Bafana Bafana.

WALTER KUBHEKA AND VUYO MANTJIE

Kubheka the former Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper is now playing for M Tiger and Mantjie is at FC Sivutsa. Both players failed to get senior national team caps.

CLUBLESS PLAYERS

LUVUYO MKATSHANA, NELSON MALULEKE, TEBOGO QINISILE, SIMON NQOI AND WISEMAN MEYIWA

The quintet have been missing in action after failing to live up to their expectations. Mkatshana was at Bidvest Wits, Maluleke and Nqoi at SuperSport United.

Qinisile was at Bloemfontein Celtic and Meyiwa was at Kaizer Chiefs before retiring following a motor accident. Meyiwa had two senior caps, whilst the rest has none.
