Double joy in Egypt: Bafana striker Fagrie Lakay scores, named man-of-match
Bafana Bafana striker Fagrie Lakay scored and then bagged a man-of-the match award for Pyramids FC in their 3-0 win over Al Ittihad on Tuesday evening.
The former Cape Town City player scored in the 58th minute of the Egyptian Premier League match.
He then left the pitch with his first man-of-the-match accolade of the season following his all-round convincing displays.
Osama Galal had put Pyramids ahead in added time of the first-half, before Fagrie Lakay’s second-half strike.
The evening turned from bad to worse for Ittihad after Mohamed Saleh’s own goal gifted Pyramids the third goal in the 85th minute.
It was his second league goal as he builds on his decent contribution to Pyramids’ cause last season.
The South African finished as Pyramids’ fourth-leading scorer with five league goals, two goals behind Ramadan Sobhi last season.
GOOD NEWS FOR HUGO BROOS AND BAFANA BAFANA
Fagrie Lakay is the second South African currently gracing the fields of Egyptian football after Al Ahly forward Percy Tau.
However, it has been a struggling start for Tau. He suffered yet another injury two weeks ago, just when he was getting his spark in front of goal.
Therefore, the 25-year-old Lakay’s top form should be good news to Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos who is badly in need of sharp strikers.
Broos recalled Lakay in the recent matches against Mozambique and Angola.
The Belgian mentor will surely bank on the form of Lakay going into the next instalment of the 2023 AFCON qualifiers in March.
PYRAMIDS CEMENT THIRD PLACE AFTER THE WIN
The second win of the season took Pyramids to third place with 20 points from 10 games.
Pyramids went into Tuesday’s match while determined to bounce back from last week’s 2-1 loss to El Dakhleya.
Pyramids are three points behind Al Ahly. They meet next week in what would be the battle for the top spot on January 2, 2023.
Pyramids punched above their weight last season as they finished in second place with 71 points, six points behind champions Zamalek.
