Lebo Mothiba sidelined: Strasbourg succumb to PSG’s Mbappe’s late goal
South African striker Lebo Mothiba was sidelined by Strasbourg FC when they lost 2-1 to Kylian Mbappe-inspired PSG in France on Wednesday.
There were hopes before the Ligue 1 game that Lebo Mothiba would play at Parc Des Princes Stadium following his recent good form.
The towering Lebo Mothiba had, before the 2022 Qatar World Cup, scored twice, mostly coming off the bench.
Lebo Mothiba previously struggled with injuries in the Ligue 1, but he keeps fighting back.
STRASBOURG COACH JULIEN STEPHAN DECIDED OTHERWISE ON LEBO MOTHIBA
However, Strasbourg coach Julien Stephan decided otherwise in the game, which saw Mbappe scoring from the penalty spot in added time.
Strasbourg defender had brought down Mbappe before he stepped forward to send keeper Matz Sels the wrong way.
The game seemed headed for a 1-1 draw after Marquinhos had scored for PSG in the 14th minute via a header.
The defender turned from hero to villain in the 51st minute after he scored an own goal to gift Strasbourg an equaliser.
KYLIAN MBAPPE HAD OTHER IDEAS WITH LAST-GASP PENALTY
However, the 2022 World Cup Golden Boot Awardee Mbappe had other ideas after winning the last-gasp penalty.
It was Mbappe’s 17th goal in 16 games for the Ligue 1 leaders, PSG, who were without Lionel Messi.
Mbappe returned to PSG training four days after losing 4-2 on post-match penalties to Messi’s Argentina at the World Cup.
France and Argentina had settled for a three-all draw in regulation time when Mbappe scored a hat-trick and Messi a double.
Wednesday’s win saw PSG go eight points clear at the summit of the table ahead of second-placed Lens.
On the other hand, the loss left Strasbourg deep in the relegation zone, lying second from the bottom.
The game marked the return of Ligue 1 action after the recent World Cup break.
