Romelu Lukaku backs Thierry Henry for Belgian managerial post

Inter Milan frontman Romelu Lukaku is optimistic that Thierry Henry will become the Belgian national team head coach following the departure of Roberto Martinez.

The former Arsenal man, Henry, was the assistant coach to Martinez, who resigned from his role following Belgium’s disappointing early exit from the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Henry is now gunning for the head coach role, and Lukaku reckons that “there is no doubt” that the Gunners’ legend should take over the national team coaching reigns.

ROMELU LUKAKU BACKING FOR THIERRY HENRY TO BE APPOINTED BELGIUM HEAD COACH…

“For me, Henry is the next coach of Belgium. There are no doubts about it,” Lukaku told Sky Italia as quoted by talkSport

“I say it openly; he will be the next coach. He has the respect of all the players, he has won everything.

“He knows how to coach, he knows what we have to do to get there.”

Lukaku continued: “He knows the team, the league, the staff. For me, he is the ideal coach for our national team.

“[If it isn’t Henry] then I don’t know who they will hire. But I don’t think Belgium should start from scratch.

“So far this generation hasn’t won but we have to keep trying to win.

“He wants to win, and I don’t think the federation is going to get a coach who wants to change everything and start from scratch. It’s not worth it to me.”

Henry formed part Martinez’s technical team back in 2016, but took a break between 2018 and 2021 to be a head coach at Monaco and Montreal Impact.

However, in a turn of events, Henry was brought back to the national team for the Euro 2020 tournament in 2021, and was also part of Belgium’s technical team for the just-ended 2022 World Cup.
