Rulani Mokwena: ‘How Cassius Mailula can become a better player’

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has revealed how in-form Cassius Mailula can improve and become a better player in future.

The 21-year-old grabbed the opportunity with both hands when he was promoted to the first team at the start of the season and made his breakthrough when Mokwena took charge of the team.

Mailula has been in great form, scoring goals for fun, filling the void left by top talisman Peter Shalulile, who got injured a few weeks before the 2022 Qatar FIFA World Cup break.

HOW CASSIUS MAILULA CAN GET BETTER

According to Mokwena, Mailula can become a better striker if he gets more game time.

“Players like Cassius [Mailula] can only get better when they are on the pitch. The only way for him to get better is to live the moments on the pitch, said Mokwena.

“Offensive players have to be on the pitch to get better, and that is the process for Cassius and [Abubeker] Nasir.

“You can’t simulate pressure; you can’t simulate a situation where you scored in the previous game, the next one you don’t score in the next one.”

WHAT RULANI MOKWENA THINKS ABOUT CASSIUS MAILULA

“Earlier in the season, Cassius was scoring, and I said he has a long way to go. We sat down and made corrections for a long time. We showed him the pictures; of course, they don’t come out the same way,” he added.

So far in the 2022/23 season, Mailula has impressed many. The teen sensation has scored seven goals in nine matches in all competitions.

On Friday night, Mailula once again led the attack when Sundowns beat Richards Bay away from home in a DStv Premiership clash.

He scored the first goal Sundowns’ 2-0 win in Umlazi.
