Mulenga scores, Shonga shines as Zambia league resumes
Ex-Orlando Pirates duo Augustine Mulenga and Justin Shonga enjoyed good days at the office on Saturday on the Zambian league’s return from a one-month Christmas break.
Mulenga and Shonga returned to the Zambia Super League five months ago after over four seasons abroad and in the South African PSL to join Lusaka clubs Napsa Stars and Nkwazi FC, respectively.
At National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka, Napsa recorded a giant-killing act when they beat defending Zambian Super League champions Red Arrows 3-1.
MULENGA ON TARGET
Mulenga scored Napsa’s third and final goal of the game in the 71st minute.
The goal was also Mulenga’s third goal since joining Napsa as a free agent in October after leaving Amazulu at the close of the 2021/2022 season.
Mulenga completed the full 90 minutes to see the 9th placed side move within four points of 6th positioned Arrows on 24 and 27 points after 18 games played.
At Arthur Davies Stadium in Kitwe, Shonga, too, played the full 90 minutes for struggling Nkwazi in Saturday’s visit to current league leaders Power Dynamos.
Nkwazi, who are third from last in the bottom four relegation zone, drew 1-1 against Power.
SHONGA PROVIDES ASSIST
Shonga’s 32nd-minute assists for Wezzy Kumwenda gave Nkwazi a one-nil halftime lead, but Power equalised via a Pride Mwansa own-goal in the 48th minute.
Shonga had a full 90 minutes shift and terrorized Power with his corners and free-kicks despite not getting on the score sheet this weekend.
The Chipolopolo striker has so far scored 5 goals for Nkwazi since returning home after leaving the same club in 2017 to join Pirates, where he was later joined by Mulenga.
Shonga then moved to Cape Town City FC, then to Ismailia in Egypt before returning to the PSL for a brief spell with Sekhukhune United and later trekked back to Zambia in September.
