Kaizer Chiefs might have suffered a heart-rending defeat on their 53rd birthday, but the club’s head coach Arthur Zwane was able to find positives after a cold Saturday night at FNB Stadium in Soweto.
Zwane says he was pleased that his men never stopped fighting and created goal-scoring chances in their 1-0 loss against Sekhukhune United in a DStv Premiership clash.
Vusimuzi Mncube spoilt Chiefs’ birthday party celebrations as he scored the only goal of the match in the second half.
Despite the setback and missed opportunity to jump up to second spot on the log standings, Zwane was smiling, all jolly, while addressing the media.
He insisted that the better side on the night lost as Chiefs lacked the killer instinct when they got into the final third, having had the most attacking opportunities.
“The boys tried their best. I commend their effort,” said Chiefs coach Zwane.
“I’m disappointed that we lost a game that we shouldn’t have lost, but if the keeper is on top of his game, there is nothing you can do.

“The fact is, we created chances. It was going to be a worrying factor if we lost at home and did not create enough goal-scoring opportunities.
“I’m disappointed that it was the club’s birthday, and we wanted to give a good present to the chairman, forefathers and everyone who has been part of the Chiefs’ journey.
“It didn’t happen, but these things do happen, and maybe we will come back stronger after this game because the good thing is that we created a lot of goal-scoring chances.
“I was going to be very worried if we had a poor game, and when you look at our game plan, it worked. It was just one night of disappointment, and our supporters came in numbers to cheer us up and unfortunately, the results didn’t come.
“But it is not the end of the world for us; we will regroup and see where we can fix and improve and we will get going.”
The defeat also means that Zwane and his men are now 13 points adrift of runaway leaders Mamelodi Sundowns at the halfway stage of the league.
However, Zwane, who is seemingly a strong believer in miracles, reiterated that the title race is far from over.
“This is our 15th game, we still have another 15 games to play, and there is a lot to play for,” he added.
“Football is a funny game, we might have lost, but there will be times when we will gain momentum, win games, and we will get to that point.
