Bafana striker gatecrashes Egyptian League Golden Boot Award race

Bafana Bafana striker Fagrie Lakay scored again for Pyramids FC on Saturday to gatecrash the Egyptian Premier League Golden Boot race.

The South African scored the third goal in the 67th minute, as Pyramids cruised to a 4-0 win over Ghazl El Mehala FC.

Ramadhan Sobhi had fired Pyramids ahead four minutes to break then Blati Toure added the second goal in the 44th minute.

Ibrahim Adel hammered the final nail on Ghazl El Mehala’s coffin with the fourth goal coming 10 minutes to full-time.

The striker is now the third leading scorer in the Egyptian League with four goals from 12 league games.

The Bafana Bafana forward is now three goals behind the pacesetter Ahmed El Sheikh of El Masry.

Currently, Al Ahly winger Zizo, Rafik Kabou (ENPPI) and Mostafa Ziko (Harras El Hodoud FC) are second on the scorers’ chart with five goals each.

The 25-year-old former Cape Town City forward is one goal away from matching the tally he realized last season in his debut season with Pyramids.

Fagrie Lakay finished as Pyramids’ fourth-leading scorer with five league goals, two goals behind Sobhi last season.

Pyramids are in fourth position on the log table, some seven points behind Percy Tau’s Al Ahly who lead the race.

Lakay’s compatriot Tau is sidelined by injury.

DREAM START FOR PYRAMIDS NEW COACH

Saturday’s result marked a good start for Pyramids FC new Portuguese coach Jaime Pacheco.

The Portuguese has replaced Greek manager Takis Gonias.

Gonias was fired last week following Pyramids’ humiliating 3-0 loss to Al Ahly in a league match.

He had rejoined Pyramids following his earlier stint with the team.

Gonias took Pyramids to Egypt Cup semifinals twice and finished in second place behind league champions Zamalek last season.

However, the latest heavy defeat proved to be the Greek mentor’s last straw.

Pyramids management has opted to bring on board the 64-year-old Pacheco.

The Portuguese mentor has Egyptian football experience.

He earlier managed Zamalek in two spells.
