Chiefs legend Marks Maponyane mourns passing of ex-teammate killed by pit bulls

Kaizer Chiefs legend Marks Maponyane has joined the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) in mourning the passing of ex-Zambia national team star Philemon Mulala.

Maponyane and the Zambian FA have sent their message of condolences following the death of Mulala.

Mulala was mauled to death by his three pit bulls in Lichtenburg, North West, this past Saturday.

The 60-year-old was found lying motionless outside his garden by his wife after being bitten by dogs.

“The Football Association of Zambia joins the rest of the football family in mourning former Mufulira Wanderers and Zambia National Team star Philemon Mulala,” said FAZ.

“We remain with wonderful memories that the late Philemon honoured us with on the pitch. There is a lot that today’s players can learn from the deceased’s generation,” said FAZ General Secretary Adrian Kashala.

MARKS MAPONYANE MOURNS FORMER TEAMMATE PHILEMON MALULA

Maponyane described Malula as a quiet person but a staunch stocky striker. Maponyane and Malula played together at Dynamos in 1991.

“I played with him at Dynamos together with the likes of Eric September and we ended up winning the JPS Knockout Cup,” Maponyane told FARPost.

“He was a very contradictory man or contrast in attitude. Very quiet as a person. But he was very strong and willing to play. He was sort of a staunch stocky striker.

“In fact, it was a surprise that he is still around because we don’t get to bump into each other a lot,” added Maponyane.

NORTH WEST POLICE STATEMENT

“A 60-year-old man of Lichtenburg was allegedly mauled to death by his three dogs. The incident was reported on Saturday, 07 January 2023 at about 15:00,” read the statement by the SAPS.

“It is alleged that on the said day during load shedding, the deceased’ wife was busy on the other side of their house when she heard the dogs barking.

“She didn’t bother to go and check what was wrong as their house is situated on a busy street. The dogs are frequently barking at pedestrians and vehicles passing by.

“Moreover, after the electricity was restored, she allegedly went inside the house looking for her husband, but could not find him,” explained Captain Sam Tselanyane.

“Upon continuing with the search, the woman saw her husband lying motionless outside in the garden. She then quickly went outside only to find that her husband was bitten by their dogs.

“Police and Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) were called and the man was certified dead at the scene. The SPCA were also called and the three dogs were removed from the premises.”
