Ex-Baroka striker rejoins Mozambican side for a third spell

Former Baroka FC striker Richard Mbulu has rejoined Mozambican side, Costa do Sol, for a third spell.

The Malawi’s Flames striker confirmed to FARPost that he was finalising his transfer to the Maputo-based team on loan.

The footballer-cum-soldier will join the Maputo club from Mafco FC, who are a Malawi Defence Force (MDF)-owned outfit.

“I feel happy that I am returning to Costa do Sol. That is all I can say for now,” he said in a brief interview.

The ex-National First Division (NFD) side, Baroka forward, has signed for Costa do Sol on loan alongside his Flames team-mate Chikoti Chirwa.

The soldier, Chirwa, has joined Costa do Sol also on loan from another MDF-owned club Red Lions.

MALAWI SKIPPER WELCOMES RICHARD MBULU

Richard Mbulu and Chirwa will have company in Mozambique of Malawi captain John Banda.

The Flames skipper, who plays for newly-crowned Mozambique champions UD Songo, has since welcomed the duo to the country’s league.

“It is always good to have friends around. I am happy for him [Mbulu]. He is a great player,” Banda told FARPost.

The Malawi captain described Costa do Sol as a big club with a rich history in Mozambique.

MBULU RETURNS TO COSTA DO SOL FOR A THIRD TIME

Mbulu joined Bakgaga in 2009 after spending three seasons with Costa do Sol.

The Malawian opted against extending his contract with Bakgaga beyond June 30 2022.

The forward then tried his luck at Zesco FC in Zambia months ago, but the Lusaka-based side decided against signing him.

Mbulu also came close to securing a transfer to Iraqi top-flight team, Al Najf, in August 2022.

However, the potential move to Iraq fell through after the MDF reportedly put its foot down.

The Flames attacker finished 2022 while on the books of Mafco.

Mbulu signed for the Bakgaga in 2019 from Costa do Sol following his impressive showing for the Flames at the Cosafa Cup held in South Africa the same year.

The Malawian international scored three goals in 23 DStv Premiership games last season.

His initial spell with Costa do Sol between 2017 and 2019 included a six-month loan at Portuguese lower league side, Saojoanese.

The 28-year-old returned to the Maputo-based club in 2018 before securing the move to Mzansi.
