Malawi top club official resigns due to death threats

A top club official in Malawi has resigned after receiving death threats from angry supporters.

Thokozani Chimbali has confirmed that he has thrown in the towel as Silver Strikers FC Chief Executive Officer following the threats.

“Silver Strikers is my home but when your life is at stake, consider your family first,” Thokozani Chimbali said.

He has parted ways with Silver, the second most successful team in Malawi’s elite TNM Super League, after three years at the helm.

“My contract ends on 30th March 2023 with the company and I have asked the board not to renew it. Meanwhile, I have decided to take leave till the end of my contract,” he added.

‘DON’T TAKE DEATH THREATS LIGHTLY’

Thokozani Chimbali said his life and that of his family was more important than anything.

“Don’t take death threats lightly. Silver Strikers is my home but when your life is at stake, consider your family first,” he said.

Thokozani Chimbali joined the Reserve Bank of Malawi-owned Silver three seasons ago.

He had previously served as general secretary of the National Youth Football Association.

Thoko Chimbali received the threats alongside Communication and Fan Engagement Officer David Dauda.

The supporters took matters in their own hands by sealing the offices of the CEO at Silver Club House in Lilongwe last week.

The fans accused Chimbali of making unilateral decisions in the running of the team.

The fans cited Silver’s release of experienced players such as former Santos midfielder Taonga Chimodzi, ex-skipper Blessings Tembo and former Malawian international, Frank Banda.

The fans also forced out national supporters committee chairperson Chisomo Mwamadi in March 2022 after questioning the manner in which he was hired.

The management of Silver has since accepted Chimbali’s resignation and appointed marketing manager Faith Mzungu as interim CEO.

RESULTS NOT TRANSLATING FOR SILVER STRIKERS FC

Silver have also been struggling on the pitch after finishing the 2022 season empty handed.

The Lilongwe side sacked Zambian coach Dan Kabwe citing poor results.

Silver youth team coach Leo Mpulula filled the void created by Kabwe’s departure.

The eight-time Malawi league champions recently advertised the post of head coach.

The most successful team is Nyasa Big Bullets in view of the 16 league titles they have under their belt.
