Ali Meza’s late strike seals victory for Maritzburg United over Arrows
Maritzburg United secured a late victory courtesy of Ali Meza’s strike in the stoppage time during the DStv Premiership on Saturday.
The match was held in Abafana Bes’thende’s backyard, Princess Magogo Stadium.
The Team of Choice collected a third victory in a row after they had defeated Royal AM and Marumo Gallants.
It seemed like a dull contest until the last 10 minutes of the match when both teams started being constructive offensively.
The United coach Fadlu Davids was still somewhat disappointed with his side’s first-half performance.
However, he says during the second stanza, they were able to amend their mistakes.
FADLU DAVIDS STILL DISAPPOINTED DESPITE THE WIN
“The most disappointing part of the first half is not being 2-0 or 3-0 up, I thought we were fantastic,” Davids told SuperSport TV after the match.
“They [players] were applying exactly what we asked for, finding the spaces we wanted to play into but not finalising the action.
“Towards the end of the first half, our midfield opened in relation to us not making the runs behind them and then allowing them to play in our spaces.
“But we sorted it in the second half, not only with the subs but just with our tactical shifting, keeping the spaces closed.”
Meanwhile, Arrows’ co-coach Vusimuzi Vilakazi lamented the lack of concentration they tend to have towards the end of the matches.
He believes the same issue let them down against the Davids’ troops.
VILAKAZI ON WHAT WENT WRONG
“There’s one thing that needs our attention in terms of dealing with our psychological aspect from our players,” Vilakazi said in the post-match interview.
“We seem to lack concentration every time towards dying minutes of the game. I think it’s room for us that we need to improve and make sure that we focus from the beginning till the end of the game.
“I strongly feel that we played very well, we created a lot of chances and that’s why the goalkeeper is the man of the match.
“We had about seven chances where we could have converted into goals but it’s one aspect that we need to work more on.”
