Mathekgane returns to PSL, while ex-Pirates attacker joins new club

Mpho Mathekgane has returned to South Africa after four years in Zambia, while ex-Orlando Pirates forward Austin Muwowo has joined his second club since leaving the Buccaneers.

Mathekgane has joined TS Galaxy in the DStv Premiership after leaving Zambian club Forest Rangers, where he spent three seasons.

“Forest Rangers Football Club has parted company with Mpho Mathekgane and four others,” Forest said in a statement.

“The South African attacking midfielder’s contract came to an end in December, and he has since moved back home where he has joined TS Galaxy.”

Mathekgane arrived in Zambia in the 2019 season when he joined Forest’ Ndola neighbours Buildcon FC.

The former Free State Stars midfielder later moved to Forest in the 2020/2021 season.

Mathekgane’s departure leaves Forest with two former PSL players on their books namely ex-SuperSport United defender Billy Mutale and former Jomo Cosmos winger Clifford Mulenga.

Meanwhile, Muwowo has found a new club barely a week after he was released by 2021/2022 FAZ Super League runners-up Zesco United.

Muwowo has joined current FAZ Super League leaders Power Dynamos on a long-term deal.

“Austin Muwowo joins ‘Aba Yellow’ (Power Dynamos)  from Zesco United on a one and half year contract running up to June 2024,”  Power Dynamos’ statement read.

Muwowo joined Zesco at the start of this season in August on a free transfer after his contract with Pirates ended last July.

He joined Pirates in 2019 from Zambian club Nkana on a three-year deal but struggled to find first-team action with the Soweto club- and it was the same situation during his six months with Zesco.

Muwowo arrives at Power who have just sold their key striker Kennedy Musonda to Tanzanian champions Young Africans in the January window.

Musonda was Power’s and this season’s leading scorer with 11 goals that have helped propel the Kitwe side to the summit of the  FAZ Super  League table.
