Spanish side Leganés seal tourism deal with Malawi

Spanish second-tier side, CD Leganés, has sealed a tourism partnership agreement with the Malawi government.

The agreement will see the former La Liga side, Leganés jerseys featuring Malawi’s Warm of Heart of Africa slogan on the front.

Leganés president, Jeff Luhnow, sealed the partnership after meeting Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera last September in New York.

“In Malawi, as in almost all of Africa, there is great soccer potential,” Luhnow told Leganes website.

“…and with this agreement, we go one step further. We want to take advantage of this opportunity to be able to reach a large part of the country’s young population.”

Malawi is called the Warm Heart of Africa because of the warm of its people.

It is part of Leganés international brand expansion strategy in Africa and beyond.

The partnership also paves the way for the Spanish team to open football academies in Malawi.

“The club intends to build football academies in Africa in the future,” Leganés statement reads.

“… and Malawi would be the chosen location for the first of these.”

WHAT ARE MALAWI’S TOURISM ATTRACTIONS?

Malawi has tourism attractions such as its lake. Lake Malawi is the third largest in Africa.

It is also the world’s fifth largest fresh water lake by volume.

Mulanje mountain is the other tourism attraction in Malawi.

Leganés playing squad will start wearing the Warm Heart of Africa-branded jerseys on Sunday, January 22 2023.

The two-time La Liga champions will be in action against Levante from 2:00pm.

The second-tier league match will take place at Butarque Municipal Stadium.

Leganés’ well-known African players include Nigerian Kenneth Omeruo and Guinean Seydouba Cisse.

The one-time Copa del Rey champions got relegated from the La Liga a few seasons ago.

Rwanda is another well-known African country that has a kit sponsorship with Arsenal.
