Former Chiefs star slams Sundowns for weakening PSL with their buying power
Former Kaizer Chiefs star Jabu Mahlangu has slammed Mamelodi Sundowns for weakening the DStv Premiership with their superior financial muscle and dropping the standard of South African football.
Sundowns use their financial advantage to get all the players they need to compete and win locally and challenge for honours on the African continent.
The Tshwane giants’ squad consists of good quality players, who can easily walk into any team and even play for Bafana Bafana.
Some of these top players are struggling for game time because of stiff competition and limited number of players for match day squad.
Sundowns are cruising towards the finish line unchallenged in the DStv Premiership race for the sixth season in a row.
The 2016 African champions have clinched five consecutive Premiership titles and seven in the last 10 seasons.
In the current campaign after 18 games, Sundowns are 16 points clear at the summit of the log standings.
In addition, Sundowns won all the domestic trophies on offer last season; the MTN8, league and Nedbank Cup.
HOW SUNDOWNS ARE WEAKENING THE STANDARD OF SOUTH AFRICAN FOOTBALL
“The PSL is no longer interesting, personally I find it difficult to watch PSL matches. The PSL standard has dropped,” Mahlangu posted on his Twitter account.
“If you check Chiefs-Sundowns game, check the team they [Sundowns] selected and check players like [Lesedi] Kapinga, [Mosa] Lebusa, Rivaldo [Coetzee] the list is endless, they were watching from the stands.
“That’s another team watching from the stands, top players that should be playing for other teams.”
WHY BAFANA BAFANA WILL NOT IMPROVE
Mahlangu further highlighted why he believes the national team and the standard of South African football will not improve.
“Then they [Sundowns] say they want to help Bafana Bafana. That’s not going to be possible because all our best players are at one club and they don’t play.
“How are we going to improve? They know that what they are doing is destroying South African football,” he added.
Sundowns’ quality squad depth has seen the team become a dominant force in the PSL. They have won five consecutive league titles and they are going for the sixth one this season.
The Tshwane giants sit at the summit of the DStv Premiership with 46 points from 18 matches. They have opened a 16-point gap from second place Richards Bay.
