How Ishmael Wadi plans to open DStv Premiership gates

Zimbabwean and JDR Stars forward Ishmael Wadi has set his sight on winning the golden boot in the Motsepe Foundation Championship,

Wadi believes topping the second-tier league goalscoring charts can open up a smooth passage into the DStv Premiership.

The 29-year-old leaped to the summit of the league’s top scorers after netting a brace at the weekend when JDR Stars thrashed Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila Football Club [TTM] 5-0 at the Thohoyandou Stadium.

He has so far managed to score eight goals for the club. Ashley Cupido of Cape Town Spurs is second on the goals charts with seven goals.

Since joining JDR Stars from the Zimbabwean elite league, Wadi has established himself as the club’s veritable goal-scorer.

WHY WADI WANTS THE GOLDEN BOOT

And with his contract set to expire at the end of the season, the former Caps United star believes the golden boot accolade will open more opportunities for him.

“It’s a great feeling, and l give credit to my teammates and the coaches. I’m slowly reaching my targets,” he told FARPost.

“Last season, I had nine goals. This season, there is potentional that can score more and also provide more assists.

“Scoring more can open more avenues for me. Actually, that could also increase my value as a striker.

“I hope to maintain the same form until the season ends. At this point, winning the golden boot is my dream,” Wadi told FARPost.

HOW WADI FARED LAST SEASON

Last season, he missed out on the coveted accolade after losing steam towards the final moments of the campaign. He scored nine goals in all competitions.

Wadi was left devastated after he missed out on opportunity to sign for AmaZulu as JDR Stars failed to reach an agreement with the former.

If he opts against renewing his contract with the Pretoria-based side, this could be a golden oppurtunity for Usuthu to pounce on him.

Being one of the ten Zimbabwean players remaining in the South African football ranks, he is hoping to break into the lucrative DStv Premiership.
