Steve Barker explains why Cape derby is a must-win for Stellenbosch FC

Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker has revealed why Cape derby against rivals Cape Town City FC on Friday night is a must win for the team.

Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker has explained why the Cape derby against Cape Town City FC is a must-win for his men.

Steve Barker’s troops have been struggling to grind results of late, winless in their last nine DStv Premiership matches.

In those games, they registered four draws and suffered five defeats.

And the only positive thing during Stellenbosch’s poor run of form is that they are creating many goal-scoring opportunities and scoring goals.

WHY STELLENBOSCH FC MUST WIN THE CAPE DERBY

“I am very confident that games like these are opportunities for the team to turn things around. Victory would give us that belief and confidence,” said Barker.

“It’s a great opportunity and one that is there to be taken. It’s obviously no secret that we are searching for a big performance from the team to get us the result we need.

“This derby is a need to win for us as a football team and as a club. The derby is always something to look forward to.

“It’s a fixture which, from day one when we got promoted to the Premiership, we wanted to play and one we look forward to playing.”

“It’s always been a very competitive game between the two teams. There’s no love lost between the two teams on the field of play.

“Once we get onto the field the players are always excited and up for the task of claim bragging rights.”

Barker further stated what he expects from their opponents whom they know very well in terms of their play, tactics and approach.

Cape Town City FC are on a good run as in their last three matches they have accumulated seven points.

“We have to prepare well and we have to be mentally ready for the challenge that lies ahead,” he added.

“Cape Town City are a good team and they have shown that recently by grounding out a couple of results with a couple of late goals to get the three points.

“They are a difficult team to play against with a lot of good individual quality.

“We have to be ready but we also have our own strengths and qualities as a team and that has to come one hundred per cent to the fore on Friday.”

Stellies will take on CT City in the Cape derby this evening, 27 January with Kickoff at Danie Craven set for 7:30pm.
