Hlompho Kekana on how Mamelodi Sundowns must frustrate Orlando Pirates
Former Mamelodi Sundowns captain Hlompho Kekana has given his former side a steer on how they should destroy Orlando Pirates when the two sides meet in the DStv Premiership on Saturday.
During his playing days, Kekana scored some wonder goals against the Buccaneers in their backyard at the Orlando Stadium.
It was on 8 February 2014 when he beat the late Senzo Meyiwa with a thunderous shot, a goal that was enough to see Sundowns secure maximum points away from home.
Meanwhile, on 1 November 2017, he scored another sensational strike from half-way to beat Wayne Sandilands. Sundowns won the match 3-1.
Thus, he’s worth a listen when it comes to how to beat Ezimnyama Ngenkani in Orlando.
He says Masandawana midfielders have to work relentlessly to keep the ball on their feet. He added that Pirates mustn’t get even a slight chance to counter-attack because that’s where their strength is.
He believes this is the best way to frustrate the Soweto giants.
HLOMPO KEKANA OFFERS SUNDOWNS ADVICE AHEAD OF ORLANDO PIRATES CLASH
“We need to beat them but at a sense of trying to go there with a very cautious approach,” he told Sundowns TV.
“Knowing very well that Pirates are just excited with counterattacks and break.
“They’re looking for that space behind you. I think the biggest thing you can ever do is never share possession with them.
“The midfielders must be on the ball all the time. Deny them that opportunity to break the team.
“Every time when we used to go there, I have beautiful memories. But some I don’t like them.
“When we beat them, the nation would be quiet. I just believe the team needs to try and use the ball more.
“If you don’t give Pirates the ball, you know what’s going to happen. They open, they get frustrated and you can score three, four, or five.
“But this is a match that requires mental strength.”
The match will take place at the Orlando Stadium at 15:30.
