Percy Tau starts as Al Ahly storm into FIFA club World Cup semis

Percy Tau earned Al Ahly’s starting berth as they beat Seattle Sounders 1-0 at FIFA Club World Cup in Morocco on Saturday.

The South African Percy Tau played for almost the entire game, as the Egyptian Premier League leaders winged to the semifinal.

PERCY TAU THROWN INTO STARTING XI

The Bafana Bafana attacker, Percy Tau, was thrown into the first XI following his inspired offering in a midweek clash.

The South African had scored Al Ahly’s last goal in the 3-0 win over Auckland City of New Zealand.

Percy Tau did not score on Saturday but he, nonetheless, put in a shift at Ibn Batouta Stadium in Tangier.

The former DStv Premiership star eventually made way for Ramy Rabia three minutes into added time.

WHAT NEXT FOR PERCY TAU AND AL AHLY AT THE FIFA CLUB WORLD CUP?

Al Ahly’s second consecutive win took them to the semifinal. Mohamed Afsha scored the lone goal of Saturday’s match.

The Reds next date Karim Benzema-led Real Madrid in the last-four and Tau should be looking forward to this game.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns star has now featured in three games since recovering from an injury.

The ex-Brighton and Hove attacker returned to domestic action in the Egyptian Premier League last week.

He had been on a month-long injury lay-off.

It is the South African’s fourth goal across all competitions this campaign.

CHALLENGE FOR AL AHLY NEW COACH MARCEL KOLLER

Al Ahly new coach Marcel Koller is trying to match Pitso Mosimane’s record at the Club World Cup.

The South African won two bronze medals at the Club World Cup in his 21-month spell with the Cairo-based club.

The Egyptian Premier League side owe their Club World Cup participation to Mosimane’s exploits.

This year, it should have been the turn of Wydad Casablanca to represent Africa at the Club World Cup.

However, FIFA pushed the 2022 edition forward to this year due to the 2022 Qatar FIFA World Cup.

That meant for this year, it is Al Ahly representing Africa again.

The South African added two CAF Champions League titles to the two Club World Cup bronze medals.
