Fadlu Davids: ‘It’s not Chiefs’ problem, it’s the entire league’s’

"I don’t think we should take away what coach Arthur [Zwane] has done."

Maritzburg United head coach Fadlu Davids insists it’s not only Kaizer Chiefs who have been enduring an inconsistent campaign but all teams in the league except Mamelodi Sundowns.

He is not blinded by the Soweto giants’ recent slump ahead of their Nedbank Cup last 32 face-off.

The Team of Choice and Amakhosi will clash on Friday, 10 February at the Harry Gwala Stadium at 19:30.

Davids says they will take nothing for granted against the struggling Phefeni Glamour Boys.

FADLU DAVIDS WON’T TAKE KAIZER CHIEFS FOR GRANTED

“They’re a very good team; I don’t think we should take away what coach Arthur [Zwane] has done,” Davids told the media during the Nedbank Cup press conference.

“They’ve gotten through a bit of a slump and not a big slump, it’s just not consistent results.

“But it’s not only Kaizer Chiefs’ problem, it’s the entire league besides number one in the league. But the entire rest of the league is inconsistent.

“So, I don’t think you should press down Kaizer Chiefs in any way, they’re a very good team. If you analyse their matches, of course, what you do, you realise what the coach is trying to implement.

“Not really getting the results at a consistent level but I think good performances, not really scoring the goals that they create.

“So, we don’t take them lightly, we give them the respect they deserve and I think we’ve got to commend them for the work they’re doing.”

The two sides have met once this season in the DStv Premiership where Kaizer Chiefs grabbed a 3-0 victory at the FNB Stadium.

John Maduka was in charge of the KZN outfit at the time. Now, with Davids having returned for the second spell, the team seems rejuvenated.

And the former Orlando Pirates coach says both teams will go to the match to grind out the victory as they are desperate for silverware.

‘BOTH TEAMS WANT TO WIN’

“It’s a match where both teams will want to win,” he added.

“Kaizer Chiefs are playing for silverware, this is probably the competition that they really focus on. And we’re playing a match to win, so you can expect an in-to-in game where both teams are playing for the results.

“Friday night, Harry Gwala Stadium, a fantastic occasion for the players to be able to show themselves and put up their hands to say give me an opportunity to help the team get out of the position we’re in.”
