Royal AM were made to sweat for victory by Cape Town City FC on Sunday evening to book their place in the Nedbank Cup last 16.
The match was decided on penalties at the DHL Stadium as the two sides couldn’t be separated after 120 minutes of football. Royal AM eventually clinched a 4-3 victory in the penalty shootout.
The Eric Tinkler-coached side was a far, much better team throughout the entire match. However, they couldn’t put the ball in the net, and they were not clinical in the final third of the Nedbank Cup clash.
CAPE TOWN CITY FC MISSED OPPORTUNITIES
City were first to threaten at goal in the first minute as Juan Zapata fired a shot from close range, but goalkeeper Hugo Nyame saved it.
Just after the half hour mark, Mduduzi Mdantsane connected with Jaedin Rhodes’ pass, however he missed the target. Lyle Lakay also came close 42nd minute but his shot went over the cross bar.

Royal AM’s first real chance came in the second half. Mlungisi Sikakane almost scored in the 48th minute, but his header went high.
The Citizens continued with their dominance in the second half. Rhodes and Relebogile Mokhuoane missed chances to score. The Citizens were denied a penalty in the 74th minute after Darwin Gonzales was brought down inside the box.
The teams headed to extra time as they couldn’t be separated after 90 minutes. Zapata was unlucky as his shot hit the bar. Moments later he almost capitalised from the keeper’s error, but fired straight to Nyame.
Substitute Khanyisa Mayo almost grabbed a late winnner in 118th minute, unfortunately his shot hit the crossbar.
TS GALAXY V AMAVARARA FC
TS Galaxy defeated Eastern Cape outfit Amavarara FC 2-0. Sphiwe Mahlangu and Phohlongo Masilake scored in the 41st and 45th minute, respectively. Both teams had several chances to score in the second half. However they were not clinical.
AMAZULU FC V TORNADO FC
Amazulu FC cruised to the last 16 as they defeated Tornado FC 3-2. Mbongeni Gumede and Gabadinho Mhango both scored in the first half in the eighth and 25th minute respectively.
Bonginkosi Ntuli made it three in the second half, with a simple tap in. It was game on as the visitors scored two quick goal in the 78th and 80th.
CASRIC STARS FC V MKHAMBATHI FC
Casric Stars FC humbled Mkhambathi FC 4-0. Kgomotso Mosadi scored a first half brace and Mumuni Abubakar was on target. Siyabonga Nkosi put the game to bed scoring the fourth goal in the 59th minute.
