Stan Matthews reveals SuperSport United’s biggest sale…and the player was a flop
SuperSport United CEO Stan Matthews has revealed the club’s biggest sale of all time, and it’s a player who became a flop.
The Pretoria side is known for moving players quite often, with neighbours Mamelodi Sundowns the biggest beneficiaries of their academy talents.
In the last two decades, an array of stars have crossed the floor from Matsatsantsa to Masandawana.
They include Denis Onyango, Elias Pelembe, Anthony Laffor, Grant Kekana, Aubrey Modiba, Teboho Mokoena, Sipho Mbule, and Ronwen Williams.
However, the transfer fees involved in all those moves have never been disclosed.
Last January, Sundowns were thought to have paid in excess of R15 million for national team midfielder Mokoena.
Anyone would have easily thought it was their biggest sale, as Belgian side RSC Anderlecht were linked with the player.
STAN MATHEWS REVEALS THE PLAYER
In an interview with Robert Marawa on Radio 947, Matthews revealed the player who fetched them their biggest paycheck.
“I’ve sold many players for much more than that [R10 million]. I’ve sold for that [R20 million].
“[The biggest sale] was in pounds, so you can apply different conversion rates. We’ve been very healthy, our sales in the transfer market have been very healthy.
“And they have been right to the player and right for us; otherwise, we wouldn’t have sold. “I’ve made one big sale overseas – a couple of overseas sales – but the biggest would be Bongani Khumalo to Tottenham Hotspur. The rest of the sales were local sales,” Matthews said.
Interestingly, Khumalo has previously said his move to Spurs was the highlight of his career, even though he never made his debut for the club.
The retired defender spent four-and-a-half years with Spurs, only appearing in the reserves.
He had several loan spells at Preston North End, Reading, PAOK, Doncaster Rovers and Colchester United before the deal expired.
Thereafter, he returned home to end his playing career at SuperSport United.
