Fadlu Davids on whether he has advantage when facing ex-club Pirates

"I know the players well, I know the club but we have to analyse the match now, how we approach it."

Maritzburg United head coach Fadlu Davids has had his say on whether he’ll have an advantage over his former employers Orlando Pirates when his side clashes with them in the DStv Premiership.

The match will take place on Friday, 17 February at the Orlando Stadium at 19:30.

Davids left the Buccaneers in June last year having spent three years and a half at the club.

He is familiar with the majority of their squad and may know what to expect from them when the two sides lock horns.

Davids worked as a co-coach along with Mandla Ncikazi since 2021 when Josef Zinnbaeur resigned just one match into the last season.

He insisted that knowing Pirates’ players isn’t enough for him to have an advantage since they have a new system under coach Jose Riveiro.

“No, there’s a new coach, a new dynamic, new system they are playing,” he told the media.

“I know the players well, I know the club but we have to analyse the match now, how we approach it.”

The Sea Robbers will be looking to get back into winning ways in the league having lost to Mamelodi Sundowns in their previous outing.

Meanwhile, the relegation-threatened Team of Choice drew their last game with AmaZulu after giving away their long 1-0 lead in stoppage time.

Davids stressed the importance of having all his squad ready for war as he looks to save the KZN-based side from falling to the second tier.

“Everybody has to be ready, our entire squad,” he added.

“We have 22 players, three goalkeepers, plus the seven DDC boys, they’re also training with us, fully first-team members.

“For the rest of the season, we gonna need everyone. That’s how we manage our squad, giving them minutes, and getting them ready.

“Because at any moment they can be called upon to fight.”
