Itumeleng Khune’s challenge to fellow Kaizer Chiefs teammates

"We need to pull up our socks as players and change the situation."

Kaizer Chiefs captain Itumeleng Khune has challenged his teammates to change their mindset and approach if they want to restore the club to it’s former glory.

Chiefs is one of the most successful clubs in PSL, and at some stage, they were dubbed ‘Cup kings’ of SA football as they used to clinch trophies every season.

However, in the past few seasons, the Soweto giants have struggled to maintain their standards of winning trophies, a major concern for veteran goalie Itumeleng Khune.

To date, Amakhosi have gone seven years without putting a new piece of silverware in their trophy cabinet.

And according to Khune, the players at Chiefs need to change their mindset for the club to reach greater heights.

CHANGE OF MINDSET AND APPROACH

“We have to change our mindset and approach on how we do things and take this club back to where it belongs,” Khune the media.

“We need to pull up our socks as players and change the situation.

“Since I got promoted in 2004. I’ve been winning trophies. “The fact that in the past seven years, I haven’t been winning, I feel like I don’t belong to the badge, I don’t belong to the club.

“It hasn’t happened, and that’s not the standard of Kaizer Chiefs. We feel bad to be representing the club. Having been here for so long, I’m not used to that either.”

PLAYERS’ RESPONSIBILITY

Although Khune admitted that they can’t change the past, he believes that Chiefs players are responsible for bringing change.

“We can’t accept what has been happening, it starts with us as players. We are responsible for what is happening now,” he added.

“Every player that signs for Kaizer Chiefs know his role and responsibility. As a goalkeeper, you are clean sheet driven, as a striker, you have to break records in the league.

Chiefs’ only chance of ending their trophy drought is winning the Nedbank Cup as they are in the last 16.
